What Are Semi-Conductors Made Of

SOT23-05Most commonly, semiconductors are made from silicon, which is, by itself, an insulator. Silicon is readily available in nature. The majority of a grain of sand, for instance, is silicon. When silicon atoms bond with other silicon atoms, the resulting shape of the molecule is does not allow for the free flow of charged particles through the material—hence why it is an insulator. The molecular shape of metals, like copper, is far better for free flowing electrical current.
